The MARIMED project’s principal aim is for tight integration between the fishing and tourism sectors. It involves testing an innovative model for recognizing and raising the standard of tourist services and for the development of sustainable tourism, with the aim of promoting and enhancing the reputation of the natural, cultural and social heritage of the Mediterranean fleets. Based on the definition of an integrated intervention model, which is founded on the active participation of various bodies (public and private), it is our intention to respond in an effective way to the following problems/difficulties:

  1. Tourist services that are sometimes of a low standard and that are bound to the summer (very much of a seasonal nature);
  2. Difficulties in creating economic and professional development opportunities for fishermen following the reduction of fishing activities;
  3. Risk of marginalization of some zones (already inserted in area/objective 2), that are dedicated in particular to fishing, due to the fact they contribute resources and cultures that are little known and valueds;
  4. As regards valuing fishing traditions, the absence of active networks for the development of “integrated” tourist products;
  5. Tourists and the local people have insufficient knowledge of the fishing and aquaculture sector;
  6. The need to raise awareness amongst the general public, and the younger generations in particular, about topics of fundamental importance, such as the pollution of the sea and of fishing products.

The model involves the participation of a network of bodies (public institutions, local businesses, academic institutions, associations, etc.) in order to share common strategies for the development of sustainable tourism based around the characteristics of the areas involved and the natural and socio-cultural heritage of the local environments of the Mediterranean fleets.

The aim is both to improve the local identities of the people in these environments and to develop and coordinate sustainable tourism experiences thanks to the creation of common tourism services which are linked to the marine environment in general and to fishing in particular.
