Barcelona is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. It is, with no doubt, one of the most cosmopolitan and more developed economically wise of Spain. Barcelona has always enjoyed an avant-garde attitude trying to follow and direct trends.

The metropolitan area of this city is huge; it has 27 municipalities with a population of 1582738 inhabitants in the same city, and 4667136 inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

Barcelona is located on a coastal plain, between the mouth of the Ebro and Llobregat Rivers and it is washed by the Mediterranean Sea, which makes it incredibly charming.

During the 70’s, the city suffered a big crisis that made industries move to the outskirts, leaving the commercial activity for the centre. Nowadays, the most important industries are pharmaceutical laboratories and publishing houses.

Barcelona is really attracting for tourists due to its huge variety of activities. The most interesting areas, architecturally wise, are the gothic city (cathedral, Palau de la Generalitat), the modernist city (Sagrada Família, Parc Güell, la Pedrera), the maritime city (the costumes house, the Royal Dockyard), the Olympic city (Olympic stadium) and the popular city (the Rambles, …).
